The use of drugs leads to moral degradation as well as wrongful legal consequences. Also drugs lead you to criminal acts.

Illegal production of drugs, distribution and use of drugs are criminal offences. Due to the use of drugs violent acts such as car accidents, assault, rape, theft, sexual abuse, child abuse, domestic violence can be occurred. Also children’s addiction to drugs will directly affect the future of the country.

The adverse effects of drug use affect country’s economic, educational and health systems and it cannot be underestimated.

Women who voluntarily became sex workers and the human traffickers who sell their daughters and children for money with the aim of finding money to obtain drugs, are serious social problem related to drugs.

Also, drug users do not provide proper education, nutrition, care to their children. Drug using is also a major issue for domestic violence and large number of criminal cases as well as a large number of civil cases such as divorces, maintenance and custody cases, assaults, physical and mental abuses, sexual harassment cases.

The Poisonous Opium and Dangerous Drugs (Amendment) Act No. 44 of 2022 is the significant Act considering the legal situation related to drugs. The drug users that can be convicted under Sections 54(a)(1) and 54(b) of the Act. Those drugs are opium, morphine, cocaine, heroin, ice and ganja. Also, under clauses (b), (c), (d) and section 54 (b) of sub-sections 52, 54 or 54(a)(1) of this Act shall not be punishable by the death sentence or life imprisonment. It relates Probation Ordinance charged with rehabilitation and imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years.

And it should be kept in mind that those who commit offenses under this Act are even given the death penalty. Also important are sub-sections 10(3) and 10(4) of the Drug Addiction Treatment and Rehabilitation Act No. 54 of 2007.

According to the above facts, awareness programs should be launched to the school community and the elderly community about effects of using drugs, violence and social degradation, legal situation and punishments, because this directly and indirectly affect all areas of the country such as education, health, economic, security and courts etc.
